Every network in your building comes down to a simple question: should the data travel as light down a glass fibre, or as electrical signals along copper wire? Both are proven, both have their place, and almost every real building uses a mix of the two. The skill is knowing where each belongs — because getting it wrong means either overspending or building in a bottleneck you will pay to remove later.
How each one carries data
Copper cabling — the familiar Cat6/Cat6A used for office points — carries data as electrical pulses. It is cheap, easy to terminate and can carry power to devices over the same cable (PoE), which is why cameras, access points and phones love it. Fibre carries data as pulses of light through glass, which means vastly higher bandwidth over far greater distances, with complete immunity to electrical interference.

The 90-metre rule: a copper permanent link is limited to 90m. The moment a run exceeds that — between floors, buildings or across a large site — fibre is not a preference, it is a requirement.
Where copper still wins
For the last stretch to a desk, camera, access-point or phone, copper is usually the right answer. It is cheaper, easy to work with, and crucially it carries power over PoE, so a single cable both connects and powers the device. Within a floor, and within the 90m limit, Cat6A copper is the workhorse.
Where fibre wins
Fibre owns the backbone: the links between comms rooms, between floors and between buildings, and any run that exceeds copper’s distance limit. It also future-proofs the building — upgrading the electronics at each end lifts capacity without re-cabling. For data centres, campuses and anything carrying aggregated traffic, fibre is the clear choice.
The hybrid reality — and the UAE angle
In practice, a well-designed building uses both: a fibre backbone between comms rooms and risers, with Cat6A copper distributing to the devices on each floor.
