- Match & decide — the system compares the live scan to the template, checks the person’s access rights and schedule, and unlocks only if everything agrees.

The right choice comes down to the risk of the door and the flow of people through it. For a low-risk store cupboard, a card is fine. For a main staff entrance where you also want attendance, fingerprint or face wins. For a data centre or cash room, layer a biometric with a second factor. A good design usually mixes methods across a building rather than forcing one everywhere — strong where it matters, convenient where it does not.
What to consider in the UAE specifically
Three local factors are worth planning for. Environment: dust and heat can affect contact fingerprint readers at outdoor or site entrances, where touchless face readers often perform better. Integration: access control rarely lives alone — it should tie into CCTV, gate barriers and alarm systems so an event at a door can be seen and recorded.
